Enagás Renovable Present at the 2024 European Hydrogen Week: A Week Driving the Future of Renewable Hydrogen
22 de November de 2024From November 18 to 22, we participated as an exhibitor at the European Hydrogen Week, one of the leading hydrogen sector events in Europe, held annually in Brussels. During this week, we showcased our progress and strategic projects to promote renewable hydrogen in Spain, reaffirming our commitment to advancing the energy transition.
The European Hydrogen Week brought together key players in the sector for five days filled with conferences, exhibitions, and networking. At Enagás Renovable, we exchanged ideas and visions with other leaders and experts to advance the development of green hydrogen production projects on a European and global scale. At our stand, attendees had the opportunity to learn about our projects firsthand, thanks to our team, which included Ramón de la Iglesia, Hydrogen Projects Manager; Mónica Sánchez Delgado, Hydrogen Projects Manager; Rafael Guerra, Hydrogen Business Development Coordinator; and Adrián Devesa, Strategy, Communication, and Regulatory Affairs Coordinator.
Enagás Renovable develops and participates in several projects awarded European funding, including those recognized at the European level:
- Catalina: a world-leading large-scale hydrogen project aimed at developing 1.1 GW of combined onshore wind and photovoltaic solar plants and a 500 MW electrolyzer in Aragón to reduce carbon emissions in industrial applications. This project, promoted alongside Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, was awarded funding under the first auction of the European Hydrogen Bank.
- La Robla: the renewable hydrogen production plant in La Robla (León), promoted by Naturgy and Enagás Renovable, has received public funding under the European Commission’s Innovation Fund. This project will have a production capacity of up to 280 MW and will be located on the site of Naturgy’s former coal-fired power plant.
- Tarragona: led by Repsol and developed with Messer, this project is part of the Hydrogen Valley of Catalonia and will have an electrolysis capacity of 150 MW, which will contribute to the decarbonization of the Tarragona Petrochemical Complex, boosting the creation of clusters around renewable hydrogen. The project has also been awarded funding in the third round of the European Commission’s Innovation Fund.
- Cartagena: led by Repsol, this project will drive the construction of a 100 MW electrolyzer in its first phase to contribute to the decarbonization of industries located in the Escombreras Valley. The European Commission has designated this project as an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) under the Hy2Use Program.
- Green Hysland: already operational, this project was funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership under the European Horizon 2020 Program and aims to deploy a hydrogen ecosystem encompassing the entire value chain in Mallorca, turning the island into the first hydrogen hub in Southwest Europe. The project has an electrolysis capacity of 2.5 MW, with production intended for the island’s tourism, transportation, industrial, and energy sectors, including injection into the gas grid to decarbonize these end uses.
Additionally, Enagás Renovable collaborates with European partners to develop green hydrogen projects in Spain, contributing to emissions reductions in Europe’s hardest-to-decarbonize sectors. Last June, Enagás Renovable signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Verbund Green Hydrogen GmbH to develop large-scale green hydrogen projects in areas of Spain with high wind and solar potential, aiming to produce large volumes of hydrogen for export to Central Europe via the H2Med hydrogen pipeline and the European Hydrogen Backbone, expected to be operational around 2030.
We thank everyone who visited our stand to exchange ideas and explore together the opportunities renewable hydrogen offers. We remain committed to actively contributing to the energy transition and positioning renewable hydrogen as a key solution in the national, European, and global energy landscape.
These types of events allow us not only to consolidate our objectives but also to collaborate in an ecosystem of innovation and strategic partnerships that reinforce Spain’s leadership in renewable hydrogen.
